New cards. Strange worlds. Some highly questionable captain’s decisions.
Whether you’re a lifelong Trekkie or wondering how spaceships ended up next to your Goblins, this set brings some intriguing challenges to the table.
What’s waiting in the final frontier?
Beam Me Up lets you recast certain spells from your graveyard by returning a creature to your hand—opening up clever rescues and another chance to use its enters abilities.
Face a Dilemma adds rewards for choosing modes on spells and abilities. Having options becomes part of your strategy, with opportunities to adapt as the game changes.
Federation rewards a variety of creature types among your non-Borg crew, while Strange New Worlds rewards differently named lands. Both give you fresh deckbuilding puzzles and reasons to consider cards you might otherwise overlook.
Spacecraft and station return, challenging you to decide when your creatures should fight and when they should help power up your next big threat.
There’s plenty here to explore even if you’ve never watched an episode. You might arrive curious—or skeptical—and leave with a new favorite strategy.
How does prerelease work?
Everyone starts by opening a Prerelease Pack containing six Star Trek Play Boosters and a foil rare or mythic rare promo you can use in your deck. From those cards, you’ll build a deck of at least 40 cards, with basic lands provided for deckbuilding. You don’t need to bring an existing deck, and the cards in your kit are yours to keep.
You’ll have a dedicated deckbuilding period before matches begin. A common starting point is 23 spells and creatures plus 17 lands, usually focusing on two colors. Look for creatures you can cast throughout the game, ways to handle opposing threats, and cards that work well together.
New to prerelease? Let us know! It’s a casual setting where everyone is discovering the set together, asking questions, and occasionally realizing they should have read that last card a little more carefully.
How do matches and pairings work?
A typical prerelease begins with deckbuilding, followed by several timed rounds—often three rounds with approximately 50 minutes per round. Each round, you’ll be paired with an opponent for a best-of-three match: the first player to win two games wins the match.
The first round’s pairings are generally random. Later rounds usually match players with similar records, so you’ll meet different opponents as the event progresses. This is typically a Swiss-style event, meaning a loss doesn’t eliminate you—you keep playing in the remaining rounds.
Between games, you can swap cards from your opened card pool into your deck to adjust your strategy. We’ll explain the evening’s round count, timing, and procedures before play begins.
Get ready with the Magic Companion app
