Your next mission: build a deck one pick at a time, assemble your crew, and see who makes the best captain’s decisions under pressure.
Join us for a Star Trek Booster Draft featuring fresh packs, friendly competition, and a whole table of possibilities. Whether you joined us for prerelease or are exploring the set for the first time, Draft offers a different challenge: every card you choose helps shape your deck, and every pack you pass gives someone else new options.
How does a Booster Draft work?
Your entry includes three sealed Star Trek Play Booster packs, provided by Purple Dragon Games for the draft. Keep them sealed until the game leader tells everyone to begin—we’ll open and draft together.
Players sit in groups called draft pods. Everyone opens their first pack, chooses one card, and passes the remaining cards to the player on their left. You pick another card from the pack passed to you, then pass it along again. This continues until all the cards have been selected.
For the second pack, everyone repeats the process while passing to the right. The third pack goes back to the left. By the end, you’ll have your own pool of selected cards to build with, and those cards are yours to keep.
The fun comes from figuring out what’s available and making decisions as you go. Do you take a powerful creature, a useful removal spell, or a card that strengthens the strategy you’re already building? Sometimes your early picks become the heart of your deck. Sometimes an unexpected card sends your whole mission in another direction.
Build your deck
After drafting, you’ll have a timed deckbuilding period to put together a deck of at least 40 cards. We provide basic lands, so you don’t need to bring an existing deck or purchase lands to participate.
A useful starting point is about 23 creatures and other spells plus 17 lands, usually focusing on two colors. Your remaining drafted cards become your sideboard, giving you options to adjust your deck between games.
Bring sleeves if you have them, along with any dice or counters you like to use. Your most important supplies are curiosity, a willingness to learn, and the ability to occasionally admit that the card you passed might have been pretty good.
What might you discover in this set?
Star Trek brings captains, crews, alien worlds, and recognizable starships into Magic, with mechanics that give you plenty to consider beyond the names and artwork.
You may find Beam Me Up spells that you can cast again from your graveyard by returning a creature to your hand and paying their listed cost. That creates opportunities to reuse helpful enters abilities, recover creatures, and get more value from cards you’ve already played.
Cards built around Face a Dilemma reward choosing modes on spells and abilities. Those flexible choices can help you respond to changing board states while supporting other cards in your deck.
Federation abilities care about the variety of creature types among your non-Borg creatures, giving you reasons to assemble a diverse crew. Strange New Worlds abilities count differently named lands you control, adding another puzzle as you balance your mana and your potential rewards.
You may also open Spacecraft with the returning station ability. Your creatures can help build up charge counters to unlock a ship’s abilities—and, on many ships, turn it into a creature. Deciding when to attack, defend, or invest in your spacecraft can make each turn an interesting command decision.
The cards you open and receive will shape your options. No particular rare, character, or ship is guaranteed, and finding a strong combination among unexpected picks is part of what makes Draft exciting.
Timed rounds and the Magic Companion app
Once decks are ready, we’ll move into timed rounds. Matches are typically best-of-three games, with approximately 50 minutes to complete each round. We’ll announce the final round count and timing before play begins.
Please download the free Magic: The Gathering Companion app and sign in with your Wizards account before arriving. At check-in, we’ll give you an event code to enter in the app.
Companion displays your opponent and table assignment, notifies you when a new round begins, and lets you report your match results. It also includes a life counter.
The first round’s pairings are generally random, with later rounds usually pairing players who have similar records. A typical Swiss-style draft keeps everyone playing through the scheduled rounds, so losing a match doesn’t end your evening.
Win matches. Earn Dragon Coins.
For each match win, you’ll earn a $5 Dragon Coin. The overall event winner will also receive an additional prize!
Build carefully, play your best, and see what your crew can accomplish.
Free pizza with your ticket
Every $25 ticket includes free pizza, because running a starship on an empty stomach leads to questionable decisions. Enjoy some food and time with the community while we explore the set together.
Your entry includes your three draft packs, the cards you select and keep, basic lands for deckbuilding, and pizza—with Dragon Coins available for match wins and an additional prize for the overall winner.
New players are welcome
Interested in Draft but unsure how to start? Our friendly game leaders will welcome you, explain the process, and help you get comfortable with the event. Let us know when you arrive if this is your first draft or if you need help with Companion.
You don’t need to know Star Trek lore to enjoy the cards, and you don’t need a collection of your own to enter. Everyone builds from the packs provided for the event.
Join us Friday, November 13, from 4–8 PM at Purple Dragon Games. Bring your appetite, meet your fellow players, and discover what you can build from a few packs and some good decisions.
Your seat at the draft table is waiting. Try to bring your crew home—and remember to leave enough lands in the deck.
