About the event

Magic Presents: To Boldly Go — Star Trek Sealed League

One $35 season pass. Six sealed Star Trek Play Booster packs. Come back and play throughout the season with no additional admission fees.

Join Purple Dragon Games for a casual Magic: The Gathering adventure through the Star Trek universe! Purchase your league entry at the counter, open your six packs, and use those cards to build your own league deck. Then bring that deck back whenever you attend.

League season: November 15, 2026–January 28, 2027

Meetups: Most Fridays, 4–8 p.m., and Sundays, 4–6 p.m.

Admission: $35 per player, paid at the counter once. All league meetups are free.

Included: Six sealed Star Trek Play Boosters and admission to all remaining league meetups.

Additional purchases: Optional

Attendance: Flexible—check individual event listings for confirmed dates and holiday exceptions.

You do not need to bring an expensive deck, purchase new cards every week, or attend every session. Your season pass lets you join us as often as your schedule allows. Come explore, learn, improve your deck, and enjoy some friendly games at the Dragon.

A League That Fits Around the Holidays

Holiday shopping, family gatherings, travel, work, and school can make a weekly commitment difficult. This league gives you an ongoing activity you can return to when you have time.

Your progress belongs to you. Missing a meetup does not erase it, and you do not have to complete the same activities as everyone else on the same dates. Come on a Friday, return on a Sunday, or take a break and pick up where you left off.

Players who attend more often will have more opportunities to practice and advance. However, there is no shared weekly chapter that permanently closes while you are away. You can still enjoy games with other league members even when your progress differs.

The one deadline to keep in mind is January 28. If earning the completion promo is your goal, allow enough time to finish the required activities before the season ends. Opponent availability also matters, so use the scheduled meetups and coordinate with fellow players when planning your visits.

What Is a Sealed League?

“Sealed” means you build a deck using cards from unopened booster packs supplied when you enter. You keep the cards you open.

Your card pool is the collection of cards available for building your league deck. Your deck is the smaller selection you choose from that pool to play with.

For ordinary Sealed deck construction:

  • Your deck contains at least 40 cards, including lands.

  • You may add basic lands.

  • Cards from your pool that are outside your deck remain available as your sideboard.

  • Games are played one-on-one.

You do not need a prebuilt Commander or Standard deck for this event.

Think of your starting pool as your ship’s supplies. You decide how to use them, discover what works, and adjust your plans as you gain experience.

Your Journey: From Starfleet Academy to Captain

The official league follows this progression:

  1. Begin at Starfleet Academy: Complete three games using the Academy instructions on your player insignia.

  2. Explore the galaxy: Visit the Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta quadrants in any order. Each has special rules on its play aid.

  3. Earn promotions: Complete three matches in each quadrant, recording progress on your insignia and receiving rank-pip stickers.

  4. Reach Captain: Collect all 15 required signatures—three for Academy and three for each quadrant.

  5. Receive your completion reward: Captains earn the league promo, while supplies last. That promo stays outside the league card pool.

Advancement is based on completing the required play; you do not have to win every encounter. Follow the insignia and play aids for the exact requirements.

Casual Attendance Strategies

The “Whenever I Can” Player

Choose whichever confirmed meetup fits your week. Bring your league materials, find an opponent, and enjoy the time you have available.

Before starting, tell your opponent how long you can stay. Leave enough time to finish your game or match and record any qualifying progress. This approach works well for players who want an occasional evening out without adding another demanding commitment.

The Every-Other-Week Explorer

Plan a few visits in advance around work and family commitments. At each visit, review your progress and choose the next activity you want to complete.

A small written note can help: “Next time, try a different color combination,” or “Two more matches needed in this quadrant.” That makes it easier to resume after a break.

The Holiday Break Player

Start when you can, enjoy a few games, and return after your busiest holiday commitments. Keep your cards, deck, and insignia together so you are ready to resume. If you want the Captain reward, discuss your remaining requirements with the event leader when you return. January offers time to continue, but completing the journey will depend on how much play you still need and whether opponents are available.

The Budget-Conscious Player

Use your original six-pack pool throughout the season. Experiment with different cards you already own within that pool, ask another player for deckbuilding suggestions, and learn through play. You can pursue league completion without purchasing additional boosters. Optional upgrades are a choice, rather than a recurring admission charge.

Heavy Attendance Strategies

The Friday-and-Sunday Regular

Attend both weekly meetup windows when offered. Use the extra opportunities to practice, try different opponents, and work through your remaining objectives. More attendance gives you more chances to play. It does not require additional purchases.

The Deckbuilding Experimenter

Keep brief notes about your games. Which cards were useful? Which were difficult to cast? Did you draw enough lands? Did your deck have enough creatures? Use those observations to try a revised build from your approved pool. You may discover that changing a few cards or your land balance improves the deck more than opening another pack.

The Mission Planner

Track which locations you have completed and choose your next destination before each visit. Coordinate with other league members who want to explore the same quadrant. Leave room for teaching, rules questions, and enjoyable games. Completing the journey can be a goal without making every visit feel rushed.

The Community Crew Member

Frequent players can help make the league welcoming by greeting returning participants, explaining the progress tracker, and offering deckbuilding advice when asked. Help another player understand their choices while allowing them to make their own decisions. A friendly opponent can make someone’s first Sealed experience much easier to enjoy.

Building Your Deck and Purchasing Extra Packs

Start by sorting your cards by color and reading the cards that interest you. Look for creatures, ways to deal with opposing threats, and cards that support one another. As general beginner advice, try building a focused two-color deck first. A common starting point is about 23 nonland cards and 17 lands, adjusted to suit your cards. These are deckbuilding suggestions, rather than special requirements of this league. You do not need to use every exciting card you open. A reliable deck that can cast its spells is often more enjoyable than one stretched across too many colors.

How Optional League Upgrades Work

WPN places optional booster purchases at rank promotions: players may buy an additional booster to expand their pool. Purchasing an upgrade is not required. For Purple Dragon’s league, check with the event leader before opening a pack intended as an upgrade so it can be handled and recorded correctly.

What About Packs Bought Outside the League?

You are welcome to buy cards for your personal collection. However, a personal purchase does not automatically become part of your league pool.

Keep outside purchases separate. That includes loose singles, traded cards, cards from other events, and packs opened for personal use. Ask the event leader about an eligible league upgrade before adding anything beyond your registered pool.

This keeps everyone’s available cards tied to the league’s entry and advancement system.

League Rules and Fair Play

1. Use Your Approved League Pool

Build with your registered league cards and basic lands. Add optional upgrades only through the league’s approved process. Keep your league pool identifiable and separate from your general collection.

2. Follow the Instructions at Your Location

Read the Academy instructions or quadrant play aid before beginning. Ask the event leader if a special rule is unclear.

3. Record Progress Accurately

Have your insignia available and record completed activities promptly. Ask staff before assuming that an unfinished encounter, practice game, or other activity qualifies.

4. Keep the Completion Promo Separate

The Captain reward is yours to keep, but it is not an upgrade for your league deck.

5. Respect Your Opponent’s Time

Agree on what you are playing before starting. Allow time to complete it, communicate clearly, and avoid beginning something you already know you cannot finish.

6. Ask Questions and Play Kindly

Newer players are welcome to ask for explanations. Experienced players should give opponents time to read unfamiliar cards and understand the game.

Call the event leader when you need help resolving a rules question. Friendly play still depends on honest tracking, legal decks, and respectful conduct.

7. Check the Calendar

“Most Fridays and Sundays” allows for holiday exceptions and other scheduling changes. Check the specific event listing before traveling to the store.

No additional admission is charged for league meetups after you purchase your season pass. Optional products and other separately ticketed store events are not included.

How to Join and What to Expect

Your First Visit

1. Stop at the counter.

Tell staff you would like to join the To Boldly Go league and purchase your $35 season pass (6 sealed packs).

2. Receive your starting materials.

You will receive six sealed Star Trek Play Boosters and your league tracking materials, subject to availability.

3. Check in for the session.

Ask staff for the event’s check-in instructions. Bring your Wizards Account information or Magic: The Gathering Companion app if you use it; staff can explain the registration process.

4. Open and organize your cards.

Follow the event leader’s instructions for opening and recording your starting pool. Keep those cards together for future visits.

5. Build your deck.

Choose cards from your pool, add basic lands, and ask for help if you are unsure where to begin. Allow yourself time to build during your first visit.

6. Begin at Starfleet Academy.

Read your instructions, find an available opponent, and start your journey.

7. Record progress before leaving.

Check that your completed activities are recorded and pack your deck, remaining pool, and insignia together.

Every Return Visit

Check in with staff, bring out your league materials, and look for an available opponent. Review your next objective, read the relevant play aid, and enjoy your games. You can also use part of your visit to review your deck, ask questions, or discuss strategies with other players. If you are arriving late or hoping for a short visit, coordinating with another participant beforehand can help.

What to Bring

  • Your league deck and remaining approved card pool after your first visit.

  • Your player insignia and progress tracker.

  • Sleeves, dice, tokens, or a life counter if you have them.

  • Your Wizards Account details or Companion app if available.

  • Enough time to complete the play you begin.

Pay once, keep your cards, and return when you can. Whether you visit occasionally between holiday plans or become a familiar face at both weekly meetups, there is room for you aboard Purple Dragon’s Starfleet crew.
