Two captains. One mission. Hopefully compatible command styles.

Bring a friend and prepare for an evening of team-based Commander at Purple Dragon Games! We’re celebrating Magic’s Star Trek season with Two-Headed Giant Commander, where you and a teammate combine your strategies to take on another two-player crew. Join us for either date—or come back for both with a new deck, a different teammate, or a plan that has undergone some much-needed engineering repairs.

How does Two-Headed Giant Commander work?

Each table features two teams of two players. Every player brings their own legal 100-card Commander deck, including their commander, and each team begins with a shared total of 60 life. You and your teammate take your turns together. You untap, draw, plan your plays, and move through combat as a team. You can discuss your hands, coordinate attacks, and work together to decide which threats need immediate attention. If you’ve ever wished someone could help you work out whether attacking was a brilliant idea or an impending disaster, this is your format.

Your decks and resources remain your own. Each player has their own hand, library, mana, permanents, and graveyard. You can coordinate your spells, but you generally cannot spend your teammate’s mana or use their cards as though they were yours. Likewise, a card that says “you” usually means the individual player, so reading carefully matters when planning your combined strategy.

During combat, you attack together and coordinate your blocks to protect the team. Damage and life gain affect your shared life total, making every successful attack, timely answer, and helpful life-gain effect part of the bigger team effort.

Build a team, then build a plan

Each player’s deck must be legal for Commander on its own. Your team can share colors, use different strategies, or even bring the same commander—there is no extra restriction requiring your two decks to use different cards.

One player might develop a threatening board while the other keeps protective spells ready. You might combine an aggressive deck with a slower value engine, or bring two creature-heavy decks and see just how crowded the battlefield can become.

Before shuffling up, talk with your teammate and opponents about deck strength and the kind of game everyone wants to enjoy. These are casual, social events, and a little conversation helps create a better experience for the whole table.

What’s the Star Trek connection?

These events are part of WPN’s Star Trek Two-Headed Giant Commander Night program, celebrating teamwork, shared decisions, and exploring Magic with a friend. Participants can receive a Commander participation promo while supplies last.

You’re welcome to bring a Star Trek Commander deck or try new cards from the set, but any legal Commander deck is welcome. Your Dragons, Goblins, Zombies, and other familiar favorites are fully qualified for this mission.

The team format gives you a fresh way to think about those decks. Cards that help another player, protect a teammate’s creatures, or affect multiple opponents can create interesting opportunities. Your favorite deck may play quite differently with someone sitting beside you who actually wants your plan to succeed.

Check in with Magic Companion

Please download the free Magic: The Gathering Companion app and sign in with your Wizards account before arriving. At check-in, we’ll provide the event code so each player can register their attendance.

Our game leaders will organize teams and tables and explain how the session will run. This is a casual Commander event, so expect social team games rather than the timed, best-of-three structure used for our Booster Drafts.

If you need help joining through Companion, let us know at check-in. Arriving a little early gives us time to get everyone registered and ready to play.

New to team Commander? You’re welcome here

Our friendly game leaders will welcome new participants, explain the shared-turn format, and help answer questions as you get started. Playing beside a more experienced teammate can be a comfortable way to learn, with someone available to talk through decisions and help you follow what’s happening.

Bring a teammate if you have one. Coming on your own? Let us know at check-in so we can help connect you with another participant as attendance allows.

Please bring your Commander deck, along with any tokens, dice, or counters it needs. If you don’t have a deck yet, speak with us before the event about getting started.

Free pizza with every ticket

Your $15 entry includes free pizza, because even the best command team needs a food break. Enjoy some slices, meet other players, and compare notes on which decisions were strategic genius and which ones will be quietly removed from the captain’s log.

Join us Friday, November 20, or Sunday, November 22, from 4–8 PM at Purple Dragon Games. Pick your commander, recruit your teammate, and put your heads together.

Just remember: sharing a life total also means sharing responsibility for that “trust me, this will work” moment.
