A prerelease is the first chance to meet a new set across the table. Join us for an evening of opening Hyperia City, discovering its characters and mechanics, and seeing what happens when cards we’ve only talked about finally enter a game. The set arrives for prerelease on October 16, one week before its wider October 23 release.

What happens at a prerelease?

You open new cards at the store, get time to look through them, and play with other people who are learning the set alongside you. You don’t need to bring a deck. If we play Sealed, the most common Lorcana prerelease format, each player opens six booster packs and builds a deck of at least 40 cards from what they opened. Sealed lets you use any number of ink colors, so a surprising combination of characters can become a real deck for the evening. Prereleases can also use Pack Rush, a quicker format played with two boosters. We’ll explain the format we’re using before play begins.

That shared discovery is what makes prerelease special. At a regular game night, you might arrive with a deck you’ve refined over weeks. Here, everyone is asking fresh questions: Which cards work together? Is that modest-looking character secretly excellent? When should you spend a new resource, and when should you save it? You learn the set by playing it, then compare discoveries with the people around you. A card that seemed ordinary in its pack might become the one everyone remembers by the end of the night.

What’s waiting in Hyperia City?

This set trades wilderness for a fantastical metropolis of street performances, bright neighborhoods, shops, and mysteries tucked into its back alleys. Disney and Pixar’s Coco makes its Lorcana debut, with the Rivera family bringing music to the Marigold District. Disney Princesses and Mickey Mouse appear in new city-inspired versions, while characters from Big Hero 6 investigate the set’s most intriguing addition: ink drops.

Ink drops provide a one-time-use ink resource that can help play a card or interact with other card abilities. Ravensburger’s lead game designer has highlighted how they may change the tempo of a game. That makes them especially exciting at prerelease: players get to discover, in real games, when an extra burst of ink creates an opening and which cards make the most of it. Fans of the artwork have plenty to explore, too. Ravensburger has revealed Enchanted cards built around nights out in the city, along with Iconic versions of Mickey Mouse – Best in Town and Cinderella – Unintentional Icon. But you don’t need a rare pull to have a great prerelease story. Sometimes the best discovery is a handful of cards you never expected to play together.
