TONIGHT'S GAME CHALLENGES

The Night Has Teeth

Something is smiling in the darkness, and we sincerely hope it is one of your friends. Tonight, the doors open onto frozen isolation, impossible corridors, and moonlit roads where the hunters may become the hunted. The Night Has Teeth brings together three games of creeping dread, desperate teamwork, and deeply suspicious behavior. Keep your companions close, your candle burning, and your escape route in mind. If someone assures you that everything is perfectly safe, perhaps ask why they are standing so far from the light.

The Thing — Your Friend Looks Almost Human

The Antarctic cold is closing in, the station needs attention, and someone on your team may be wearing a human face rather convincingly. In The Thing: The Boardgame, players struggle to keep their outpost functioning and arrange an escape while a shapeshifting alien hides among them. Cooperation is essential, but infection and sabotage make trust a dangerous resource. A helpful teammate might genuinely be saving everyone—or carefully preparing a seat on the rescue helicopter. What makes this game unforgettable is the conversation around the table: accusations, explanations, uneasy alliances, and the terrible realization that your most trusted companion might have been helping for entirely the wrong reasons. The monster does not always need to break down the door. Sometimes, you invite it inside.

Players: 1–8; the hidden-role experience uses 4–8 players, with separate rules for 1–3.

Game length: 60 minutes or more, plus teaching time.

Difficulty: Moderate to challenging; combines survival management, hidden identities, and plenty of discussion.

Award recognition: No major award win or nomination verified for this edition.

The Night Cage — Do Not Let the Candle Go Out

You awaken with a candle, a little courage, and absolutely no useful explanation. Around you stretches a labyrinth swallowed by darkness, where passages vanish as soon as your light leaves them. In The Night Cage, everyone works together to find keys, locate a gate, and escape as a group. Moving forward reveals new paths, but it can also erase the route behind you. Meanwhile, creatures called Wax Eaters lurk beyond the candlelight, making every promising corridor feel like a questionable invitation. Its unforgettable feature is the disappearing maze: the board itself refuses to remain dependable. A passage that offered safety moments ago may be gone forever, turning a simple movement decision into an urgent conversation. Stay together, think carefully, and resist the temptation to announce, “I’m sure it was this way.”

Players: 1–5.

Game length: Approximately 50 minutes.

Difficulty: Moderate; straightforward actions lead to a demanding cooperative puzzle, with adjustable difficulty.

Award recognition: Its prototype won the 2019 Ion Award for Best Light Game; the released game was a 2021 Board Game Quest Best Cooperative Game nominee.

Fury of Dracula — The Count Sends His Regards

The Count has returned, and Europe is beginning to look alarmingly like his personal hunting ground. In Fury of Dracula, one player becomes Dracula while the others control the hunters determined to find and destroy him. Dracula travels in secret, leaving a trail of dangerous encounters while the hunters coordinate their movements and piece together his whereabouts. Discovering his trail is only the beginning: catching a vampire and surviving the confrontation are rather different accomplishments. What makes this game unforgettable is the unfolding pursuit. Scattered clues become a theory, the hunters tighten their net, and one clever escape can send everyone scrambling across the map again. It is a gothic chase filled with misdirection, close calls, and the dreadful suspicion that the Count is enjoying himself considerably more than you are.

Players: 2–5.

Game length: Approximately 2–3 hours; a first game may take longer.

Difficulty: Challenging; the evening’s deepest game, with hidden movement, investigation, and tactical combat.

Award recognition: The third edition received a 2015 Golden Geek nomination for Best Thematic Board Game.

HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME: Begin the hunt with Shut Up & Sit Down’s Fury of Dracula tutorial on YouTube, which teaches the third edition.
