TONIGHT'S GAME CHALLENGES
Monster Mash-Up
The laboratory doors are open, and someone has been combining things that absolutely should not go together. Zombie wizards. Dinosaur pirates. A treasure thief with more ambition than survival instinct. Tonight’s Monster Mash-Up is a celebration of outrageous combinations, monstrous trouble, and plans that become considerably less sensible once the cards hit the table. Build something spectacular, unleash something ridiculous, and try to look innocent when the dragon wakes up. Around here, “What could possibly go wrong?” is practically an invitation.
Smash Up — It’s Alive! And Apparently a Pirate.
Why choose one outrageous army when you can stitch two together? In Smash Up, you shuffle two factions into a single deck, creating combinations such as robot pirates, zombie wizards, or dinosaur ninjas. Then you deploy minions and play actions to compete for bases and claim victory points. Each faction supplies a different set of tricks, so your peculiar creation needs more than a frightening entrance—it needs a plan. Zombies return from the discard pile, pirates move their minions around, and dinosaurs contribute the reassuring presence of enormous teeth. What makes this game unforgettable is discovering how your two halves work together, then springing a combination that sends everyone else back to the drawing board. The laboratory has produced a masterpiece. Whether it follows instructions is another matter entirely.
Players: 2–4.
Game length: About 45 minutes or more, plus teaching time.
Difficulty: Moderate; straightforward turns with card combinations that reward careful timing.
Award recognition: 2013 Origins Awards nominee for Best Traditional Card Game.

Clank! — A Monstrously Bad Idea
Somewhere beneath the mountain lies a fortune. Unfortunately, its owner is enormous, irritable, and equipped with a built-in furnace. In Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure, players sneak through a dragon’s dungeon, collecting treasure and acquiring cards that improve their movement and abilities. Your growing deck shapes your expedition, but noisy actions create Clank—and noise makes the dragon’s attacks increasingly dangerous for you. The temptation is wonderfully terrible: go deeper for richer rewards, or head for daylight while you still have eyebrows? What makes this game unforgettable is the collision between the clever deck you are building and the increasingly desperate escape you are attempting. Your rivals might be gathering more treasure, but they might also be leaving you behind. One more shiny object seems harmless until the dungeon starts feeling like an oven.
Players: 2–4.
Game length: Approximately 30–60 minutes; allow extra time for a first game.
Difficulty: Moderate; combines deck-building, dungeon movement, and pushing your luck.
Award recognition: 2017 Mensa Select winner.

DC Deck-Building Game — A Cape, a Cowl, and a Questionable Combination
The city needs a hero. You would also appreciate a very impressive collection of cards. In DC Deck-Building Game, you take on the identity of Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, or another Justice League champion, then build your deck during play. Acquire powers, equipment, and allies to strengthen your turns, defeat Super-Villains, and collect victory points. Your chosen hero has a special ability that encourages particular strategies, while the available cards invite unexpected combinations from across the DC Universe. What makes this game unforgettable is watching a modest starting deck become a spectacular engine of comic-book action. A carefully chosen sequence can turn an ordinary hand into your grand entrance, complete with defeated villains and deeply impressed—or mildly irritated—rivals. Tonight, the strongest creation in the laboratory might be wearing a cape.
Players: 2–5.
Game length: Approximately 30–45 minutes, plus teaching time.
Difficulty: Approachable strategy; a welcoming introduction to deck-building with plenty of room for clever combinations.
Award recognition: 2014 Origins Awards nominee for Best Traditional Card Game.
