TONIGHT'S GAME CHALLENGES

Dragon’s Lair

There is treasure in the darkness. There are also teeth. Tonight, we venture into the places sensible villagers avoid: monster-haunted dungeons, a dragon’s guarded hoard, and mysterious seas where enormous creatures stir beneath your ship. Welcome to Dragon’s Lair, an evening of daring adventurers, questionable decisions, and the occasional urgent retreat. Some tables will ask you to stand together against the beasts. Others will tempt you to grab one more glittering treasure before making your escape. Bring your courage—and perhaps reconsider that very noisy suit of armor.

Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons — The Treasure Chest Has Teeth

Gather your party. Something dreadful has escaped, and simply waving a sword at it will not solve everything. In Horrified: Dungeons & Dragons, players work together to confront iconic creatures including the Beholder, Displacer Beast, Mimic, and Red Dragon. Each monster presents its own challenge, so your team must coordinate movement, collect useful items, protect citizens, and figure out how to overcome the threats before disaster overtakes you. This is a complete cooperative board game, so you can step into the adventure without preparing a roleplaying character or knowing D&D’s rules. Its unforgettable charm comes from the monsters themselves: each changes the puzzle facing your party, turning familiar fantasy creatures into distinct problems to solve. And when the treasure chest might be a Mimic, suddenly everyone has opinions about who should open it.

Players: 1–5.

Game length: Approximately 50 minutes, plus teaching time.

Difficulty: Approachable to moderate; shared planning helps new adventurers learn, while different monster combinations change the challenge.

Recognition: Uses the Horrified gameplay system, which Ravensburger describes as award-winning; that recognition should not be confused with a separate award for this D&D edition.

Clank! — Please Rob the Dragon Quietly

The plan was elegant: sneak into the mountain, steal a priceless artifact, and slip away before its owner noticed. Then someone made a clank. In Clank!: A Deck-Building Adventure, you build a deck of cards that helps you travel through the dungeon, acquire useful tools, and collect treasure. Unfortunately, some of your exploits also make noise, increasing your exposure to the dragon’s attacks. The deeper you venture, the more tempting the rewards become—and the farther you must travel to escape. What makes this game unforgettable is that delicious argument between greed and survival. You can see the way out. You can also see something shiny just a little farther down the corridor. Meanwhile, another thief is heading for daylight, and your carefully planned expedition is beginning to resemble a very flammable mistake.

Players: 2–4.

Game length: Approximately 30–60 minutes; allow extra time for a first adventure.

Difficulty: Moderate; combines deck-building, movement, and deciding how far to push your luck.

Award recognition: 2017 Mensa Select winner.

Tsuro of the Seas — Something Beneath the Hull

Leave the dungeon behind, captain. The dragons have taken to the water. In Tsuro of the Seas, you place tiles to chart your ship’s course across a sea of winding routes, trying to remain afloat while avoiding collisions and the edge of the board. But these waters belong to the daikaiju: enormous sea monsters whose movements can destroy routes, swallow ships, and overturn your best plans. The rules are easy to grasp, yet every tile deserves a second look. Will that graceful turn carry you toward safety, send another captain into trouble, or leave you directly in a monster’s path? Its unforgettable appeal is the contrast between the beautiful, orderly routes and the chaos lumbering through them. One moment you are a master navigator. The next, your voyage has become a cautionary tale.

Players: 2–8.

Game length: Approximately 20–40 minutes.

Difficulty: Easy to learn; simple tile placement combines with route planning and unpredictable monster movement.

Recognition: No major award win or nomination verified for this edition; its standout features are its striking artwork, accessible rules, and room for up to eight captains.
