TONIGHT'S GAME CHALLENGES

Don’t Trust the Water

The harbor is quiet. The waves are gentle. Someone assures you there is absolutely nothing to worry about. Naturally, this is when we recommend backing away from the dock. Tonight, we venture into waters filled with hungry predators, monstrous surprises, and stories that smell suspiciously like bait. Don’t Trust the Water brings together a seaside thriller, a sea of outrageous bluffing, and a voyage through monster-infested routes. Keep your eyes on the horizon and your ears open for suspicious explanations. Around these tables, something is always waiting to pull you in.

Jaws — The Beach Is Open. Regrettably.

Welcome to Amity Island, where the swimming looks lovely and one player knows exactly why it isn’t. In Jaws, one player controls the shark while the others take charge of Brody, Hooper, and Quint. The adventure unfolds in two acts: first, the crew searches for the hidden shark while trying to protect swimmers around the island; then, the action moves aboard the Orca for a desperate confrontation at sea. What makes this game unforgettable is that shift from hunting a concealed threat to facing it as the boat comes apart beneath you. The shark gets to plot an alarming afternoon, while the crew discovers how quickly a confident plan can become frantic teamwork. You may begin discussing strategy very calmly. By the second act, your opinions about boat size will likely have changed.

Players: 2–4.

Game length: Approximately 60 minutes, plus teaching time.

Difficulty: Moderate; two distinct acts bring different rules, with deduction, teamwork, and tactical decisions.

Award recognition: 2019 Golden Geek nominee for Best Thematic Board Game.

Sounds Fishy — A Perfectly Convincing Load of Codswallop

Not every danger has fins. Some arrive with excellent eye contact and a completely invented explanation. In Sounds Fishy, one player reads a question while everyone else supplies an answer. One answer is genuine; the others are slippery little fabrications designed to sound convincing. The guesser must weed out the false answers, earning points while trying to avoid accidentally selecting the truth. Push your luck too far, and your lovely catch of points slips away. What makes this game unforgettable is the nonsense your friends can deliver with astonishing confidence. You do not need a head full of trivia—just imagination, a straight face, and a healthy distrust of anyone who begins with, “Actually, that’s a well-known fact.” This is our evening’s lighter voyage: plenty of laughter, questionable stories, and absolutely no guarantee that the sensible answer is correct.

Players: 4–10.

Game length: Approximately 15 minutes.

Difficulty: Easy; quick rules, creative bluffing, and no specialist trivia knowledge required.

Award recognition: Winner of the Games category at the 2023 Gift of the Year awards.

Tsuro of the Seas — Your Map Forgot the Monsters

Your ship is ready, your course is plotted, and the sea has apparently declined to cooperate. In Tsuro of the Seas, players place route tiles and follow their winding paths, trying to keep their ships from colliding or sailing off the board. Unfortunately, giant sea monsters called daikaiju roam these waters, destroying tiles and swallowing vessels unlucky enough to cross their paths. Every turn invites a little navigation and a little nervous anticipation: you can plan around the danger you see, but the dice decide when the monsters move. What makes this game unforgettable is how quickly a beautiful route can become a spectacular mistake. One captain’s clever escape might send another toward disaster, while a passing monster rearranges everyone’s expectations. Be the last captain sailing to win—and remember that a calm patch of water is merely a place where nothing has eaten you yet.

Players: 2–8.

Game length: Approximately 20–40 minutes.

Difficulty: Easy to learn; visual route planning meets unpredictable monster movement.

Award recognition: No major award win or nomination verified for this edition. Its distinctive appeal lies in its beautiful presentation and sudden reversals of fortune.
