TONIGHT'S GAME CHALLENGES
Night of the Masquerade
Behind every mask lies a story—and tonight, you get to choose yours. Will you become a caped champion, command an outrageously mismatched army, or slip through the shadows while sinister riders follow your trail? Welcome to a masquerade of secret identities, spectacular powers, and deliciously dramatic decisions. Our three featured games invite you to step into another world, where an innocent smile might conceal a winning move. Choose your role carefully, dear guest. The evening has only just begun.
DC Deck-Building Game — Behind the Cape and Cowl
Every masquerade needs a mysterious hero, and this table has an entire Justice League to choose from. Become Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, or another iconic champion as you build your arsenal of powers, equipment, and allies. You begin with a modest deck, then acquire stronger cards during play to confront Super-Villains and collect victory points. The delightful twist? Your heroic identity guides your strategy, but your growing deck can bring together unexpected combinations from across the DC Universe. Even Gotham’s finest detective might appreciate a little Kryptonian assistance. What makes this game unforgettable is watching your humble opening hand become a powerhouse of spectacular combinations—then revealing your strongest turn just when your rivals thought they had stolen the spotlight.
Players: 2–5.
Game length: Approximately 30–45 minutes, plus teaching time.
Difficulty: Approachable strategy; a good introduction to deck-building, with card reading and planning involved.
Award recognition: 2014 Origins Awards nominee for Best Traditional Card Game.
HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME: Learn the heroic essentials with Roll For Crit’s DC Comics Deck-Building Game tutorial on YouTube.
Smash Up — A Most Improper Masquerade
The invitation said “dress to impress.” Apparently, someone interpreted that as “arrive with zombie pirates.” In Smash Up, you combine two factions into one gloriously unlikely army, then compete to control bases and claim victory points. Will your guests be dinosaur ninjas, robot wizards, or something equally unsuitable for polite company? Each faction brings its own tricks: pirates move around, zombies return from the discard pile, and dinosaurs prefer the subtle diplomatic approach of enormous power. What makes Smash Up unforgettable is the personality of every pairing. A new combination changes your tactics, while surprise plays can turn a comfortable lead into a wonderfully ridiculous disaster. At this masquerade, the biggest entrance might belong to someone who was supposed to stay buried.
Players: 2–4.
Game length: About 45 minutes or more; allow extra time for a first game.
Difficulty: Moderate; the basic turn is straightforward, but interacting card abilities reward careful timing.
Award recognition: 2013 Origins Awards nominee for Best Traditional Card Game.
HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME: Meet your wonderfully mismatched entourage with The Rules Girl’s Smash Up tutorial on YouTube.
Hunt for the Ring — Cloaks, Shadows, and a Dangerous Secret
Beyond the masquerade’s candlelight, black riders search the roads. One player guides Frodo and his companions toward Rivendell, secretly recording their movements, while the others command the Nazgûl hunting them. This is a contest of hidden movement, deduction, and nerve: the hunters must piece together the hobbits’ trail, while the Ringbearer tries to keep a precious secret beyond their reach. Played across two chapters, the journey travels from the Shire to Bree, then onward toward Rivendell. Its unforgettable magic is the tension between what one side knows and what the other suspects. A quiet stretch of road becomes a dangerous gamble, and a narrowing search can make everyone lean closer to the board. Keep your expression composed, dear Ringbearer. Your pursuers are watching.
Players: 2–5.
Game length: Approximately 90–180 minutes.
Difficulty: The most demanding game of this evening’s lineup; best for players who enjoy detailed rules, teamwork, and sustained deduction.
Award recognition: No major award win or nomination verified in the sources reviewed. Its standout attraction is its atmospheric recreation of Tolkien’s pursuit through Middle-earth.
HOW TO PLAY THIS GAME: Prepare for the journey with Game Boy Geek’s YouTube tutorials for Part 1 and Part 2.
